PART ONE: KNOW YOUR SITE

Understanding the specifics of your site enables you to create a sustainable and functional plan. This plan will guide your decisions on where to remove turf, what to replace it with, and how to adjust your irrigation system effectively.

PART ONE: KNOW YOUR SITE

  • Draw out your property
    • Option: take a screenshot of your land on Google Maps (or use other available aerial imagery) and print it out
  • Map out your irrigation zones to help you visualize and align them with your hydrozones as part of your future planning (see page 6).
    • To do this, run your irrigation system through a ‘test’ cycle and draw out where each zone is on the map
  • Mark existing hardscapes (patios, walkways, sheds, power lines, etc)
  • Draw out vegetation you would like to keep (turf, garden beds, trees, existing water-wise areas, etc)
  • Make note of your site conditions (sun, soil, slope, water)
    • Where does the sun rise and set? Note how much sunlight each section of your property receives.
    • What kind of soil do you have? Consider taking a soil sample to know what plants will thrive best
    • Mark slopes in your yard and consider water run-off
    • Does water pool anywhere? Do you have efficient drainage?
